Evansville’s Juicy Seafood offers seafood porridge, fried seafood, more

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – More than a year after the first sign appeared, Juicy Seafood is finally open at the Shoe Carnival Towne Center.

There has been an absolute explosion of Cajun or low country seafood restaurants in our area and the Midwest over the past few years. A new phenomenon is that many of them are owned by Chinese entrepreneurs.

These restaurateurs have taken on the field of boiling seafood and applied the same principles that allow them to offer tasty and freshly prepared Chinese food quickly and at a low price.

“The way we prepare food is easier in terms of the cooking method and requirements for a chef,” she said. “This way we can maintain consistency across all sites and we have a streamlined kitchen operation with fewer employees. “

Wherever this method originally began, it has certainly been successful.

The proliferation of Juicy Seafood restaurants and restaurants that are closely or weakly associated (or similar but not overtly associated) is mind-boggling.

The menu for everyone is the same, featuring appetizers, seafood porridge with the title “Get your Hands Dirty” and a section called “Something Fried” with baskets of fried seafood.

A quick online search revealed another chain of boiling restaurants called “The” Juicy Seafood with a different logo, but the same menu.

Our Juicy Seafood is not, according to Tong, related to The Juicy Crab, a newly opened restaurant in Owensboro and located in Southeast, Texas and Ohio, although the owners are from the same region of China. and know each other. The menu is the same as that at Yang’s Seafood Bucket, formerly Yang’s Shabu Shabu in Woodland Center. A quick online search found the same menu in many versions of Juicy Seafood or The Juicy Seafood with regional names across the United States east of the Rockies, totaling dozens of locations.

In the appetizer section of the Juicy Seafood menu, you’ll find raw and steamed crab cakes, wings and Gulf oysters. Raw oysters must be consumed inside the restaurant and cannot be included in take out orders. The fried calamari are served with a cocktail sauce and a mild Thai chili sauce. If you don’t want a fried appetizer, start with a bowl of okra or New England clam chowder.

Accompaniments include sweet potato fries or fries, hush puppies, rice, coleslaw and more. Fried baskets can be ordered with shrimp, tilapia, oysters, catfish or chicken fillets.

The seafood options for boils are plentiful: shrimp with or without head, green or black mussels, snow or king crab legs, whole or blue Dungeness crab, lobster tail, crayfish and clams. Boils are served with corn and potatoes, and sausage can be added.

The diner chooses a heat level ranging from mild to extra strong and flavorful, from garlic butter to Cajun spices, lemon pepper or a mixture of all.

The boil comes quickly in a hot, inflated plastic bag. A bib, crab crackers and a bucket for seashells are also provided.
