Homeowners and guests respond to fire destroying popular upstate fishing camp

COWPENS, SC (FOX Carolina) – The Wagon Wheel Fish Camp was destroyed in a fire this weekend.

The Cowpens Fire Department said crews attended the scene around 10.52am on Sunday. They controlled the flames but said they expected the building to be a total loss.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

The owners released the following statement after the fire:

“Our journey began in 1996 with Wagon Wheel. It was difficult at first, but over the years it has grown with the support of the surrounding communities. Over the years, we’ve hired a lot of young people that we’d like to think we helped shape. Many didn’t even know how to hold a broom let alone sweep. We will miss those teachable moments and all the connections and friendships we have made. We still don’t believe what happened, but who knows, maybe we’ll be back. In the meantime, come see us at our partner restaurant in Cross Hill, Boathouse Fish Camp. Thank you from the owners of Wagon Wheel Fish Camp, Christian and Christine Perry”

We spoke to customers who were sad to hear the news about the restaurant.

Kim Leming told us, “My mom and dad came here with her mom when she was pregnant with me. They had a booth called Kim’s booth because she gave birth with me in that booth and her mom said Liv you can’t wait for me to finish my catfish stew! And she said no, I can’t.

Crews are still at the scene investigating what started the fire, but say they believe it started in the kitchen. We’ll update this story as we learn more.
